She won several singles and doubles titles and became the first Indian woman to win a WTA tour event in 2005. In 2008, she fell for criticism when she was pictured with the national flag resting on her feet. In response she announced that she will not represent India in tennis. 

In 2012 Olympics, she wanted to play mixed doubles with Mahesh Bhupati but All India tennis association decided to pair her with Laender paes though that loss in Quter final of mix doubles. 

In 2019, she crossed words with veena Malik when she criticised her for taking her son to the “sheesha place”.   Veena Malik commented- "Sania, I am actually so worried for the kid. You guys took him to a sheesha place isn't it Hazardous? Also as far as I know Archie's is all about junk food which isn't good for athletes/Boys. You must know well as you are mother and athlete yourself?" In reply, Sania said that she cares about her son a "lot more than anyone else does."
